Riboflavin intake modulates the association between passive smoking and hypertension in children and adolescents aged 6–19 years based on the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey 2007–2018

Biography:

Xiaoqing Xiong, holds Master's degree, an pediatrician from Chongqing Medical University, specialized in pediatric hematology. She completed her residency at the affiliated children's hospital. Currently serving as a committee member of the Chongqing Pediatric Society's nephrology group and recognized as an outstanding clinical physician, she has extensive experience in pediatric respiratory, digestive, hematologic diseases, child nutrition, and growth disorders.

Research Interests:

Passive smoking was related to increased risk of hypertension in children. Antioxidant nutrients were beneficial in improving hypertension. Riboflavin has antioxidant properties. This study aimed to investigate the moderating effect of riboflavin intake on the relationship between passive smoking exposure and hypertension in children and adolescents aged 6-19 years. Data of children and adolescents aged 6-19 years was extracted from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) 2007-2018. Weighted univariate logistic regression models were conducted to select potential covariates. The associations between passive smoking exposure, riboflavin intake, and hypertension were explored by using weighted univariate and multivariate logistic regression models. The association was also investigated in age, gender, and race subgroups. The results were presented as odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs). Totally, 11445 children and adolescents with a mean age of 12.89 (0.06) years were included. Among them, 5896 (51.89%) were males and 3244 (54.88%) were white race. After adjusting covariates, cotinine ≥0.05 ng/mL was associated with increased odds of hypertension (OR=1.41, 95%CI: 1.10-1.80). Riboflavin intake could moderate the association between serum cotinine level and incidence of hypertension (OR=1.69, 95%CI: 1.19-2.39). The moderating effect of riboflavin intake was also found in those aged <13 years old (OR=1.88, 95%CI: 1.19-2.97), ≥13 years old (OR=1.53, 95%CI: 1.05-2.23), males (OR=1.82, 95%CI: 1.17-2.83), and white race (OR=2.41, 95%CI: 1.23-4.75). Passive smoking was related to a higher incidence of hypertension in children and adolescents aged 6-19 years.
